A List of Public Universities Named After People In South Africa South Africa is one of the countries in Africa with many public universities. It is the largest country in Southern Africa with many public universities. Public universities established by the government. Unlike private institutions/universities, public universities are more affordable. Currently, all public universities in South Africa are funded by National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), a program founded by the government to assist students from low-level income families like me and cannot afford to pay university fees. This is beneficial because it gives the opportunity to those from disadvantaged families to also study without barriers. In South Africa, there are currently 26 public universities. Out of 26, only 6 of them are named after notable people. On that 6 people, all of them have died, with Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela being the most notable person.
